Product Management Morning Forum | Improvisation and Ideation at Work

Tuesday, October 12, 2010, 8:30AM to 10:00AM

All work and no play will keep great ideas away. Fun and play are key ingredients to ideation and innovation. Improvisational tools that allow us to play also strengthen our ability to see the new in the ordinary. Improvisation means, in the moment, saying “yes, and!” to new ideas by building on them, suspending judgment, and being willing to drop all assumptions about what’s “possible.” Improvisational tools are also fun and that helps unleash our creativity super powers.

When we approach ideation differently (and not with the same old tools), we break expected patterns of thinking. This allows us to see new connections among sometimes unrelated ideas. That’s when great ideas emerge. Applied improvisational tools (not comedy, but fun just the same) help generate fresh ideas, facilitate new connections among concepts, and aid in better decision-making.

Discussion Facilitator: Kathy Klotz-Guest MA, MBA, MLA
